The Structure of Mandarin Comparatives

چکیده

In this talk we will explore the syntactic structure of the " phrasal " Mandarin bi comparative. We aim to: • motivate the Mandarin comparative morpheme bi as a v head; • argue against Liu's (1996) PP analysis and Xiang's (2005) DegP analysis on syntactic grounds; • explore a neo-Davidsonian event-based conceptualization of comparison. A comparative generally involves two things to be compared, the target and standard, and a gradable predicate which introduces a scale over which they are compared (predicate of comparison). There are broadly two widely-accepted analyses of the syntax of English adjectival comparatives: Here, the English comparative morpheme "-er " is a Degree node which selects a standard (than-phrase). This Degree phrase is an adjunct of the adjective. AP DegP Deg-er ThanP than standard AP predicate of comparison 1.2 The DegP analysis (Kennedy, 1997) Kennedy (1997) argues for the comparative morpheme (again a Degree) selecting the adjective , with the than-phrase introduced as an adjunct.

Mandarin Transitive Comparatives and the Grammar of Measurement

Mandarin Chinese has two strategies for forming comparatives of superiority: one in which the standard of comparison is introduced by the morpheme bi, and one that resembles a transitive verb construction, in which the standard of comparison directly follows a gradable adjective. The ‘transitive comparative’ exhibits two special restrictions: the predicate must be one that accepts differential ...

Degree comparison without degree abstraction1

This paper argues that Mandarin Chinese fills a gap in the typology of comparative constructions in natural language. Beck et al. (2004) proposes that languages may vary in whether or not they allow for degree abstraction, and Kennedy (2007) proposes a distinction between comparative constructions with degree-denoting standards and individual-denoting standards. Based on these parameters, we ex...

L1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners

This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...

Nothing Compares to You

Comparative constructions are a classical topic in semantics. The vast majority of the literature on comparatives, though, is focused on languages like English, French or German. These languages are special in that adjectives take comparative morphology, and in that they allow for comparative phrases as well as clauses. Stassen’s (1985) survey of comparative constructions shows that this is a r...

The Adjective of Quantity Duo ‘many/much’ and Differential Comparatives in Mandarin Chinese*

This article discusses differential comparatives involving the adjective of quantity duo ‘many/much’ in Mandarin Chinese. We show that the obligatory construal of a postadjectival duo-phrase as a differential phrase rather than a degree modifier is due to the interaction of four factors: (i) gradable adjectives denote measure functions rather than relations between degrees and individuals, (ii)...
